I Couldn't Believe What Happened When I Tried One of the Most Popular Chemical Exfoliators

The following is a guest post from one of our customers reviewing our exfoliating AHA treatment, Overnight Star. Keep reading for a full product review.

Lactic acid is one of the most popular exfoliating ingredients used for skincare, and I can understand why. Much gentler than many other alpha-hydroxy acids (or AHAs for short), this radiance-boosting and multi-correctional compound is derived from soured milk and is known for its surface exfoliating properties, sloughing away dead skin cells while reducing the appearance of fine lines and evening out skin tone. Given that I have never tried lactic acid myself, I decided to test one of the most-popular products for exfoliation and anti-aging benefits among beauty influencers on social media: Glomance’s Overnight Night Star.

I applied it every day over the course of three weeks and carefully observed any change in my skin’s texture, radiance, and moisture levels as well as improvement to my dark spots and fine lines. Has this exfoliating, plumping serum treatment earned its status as a premier skincare treatment? I put it to the test, and here’s what I found.

Glomance has worked with highly regarded experts in the beauty industry and the very same labs that high-end luxury brands work with to create high performance products that deliver significant results with respect to anti-aging and clear skin. The brand also produces clean, safe products and use green practices, such as producing in small batches and without artificial fragrances, mineral oil, and sulfate cleansers.

According to the brand, the Glomance team created Overnight Star with one goal in mind: a skincare product that gives an immediate glow with high quality ingredients. That’s why Glomance worked with a team of skincare experts over the span of 18 months to formulate Overnight Star. What came out of this painstakingly detailed process was a powerful combination of actives and botanicals that has now become a staple in the founders’ own skincare routine.

My skin’s condition varies from season to season, and summer is when it tends to become more prone to clogged pores and blemishes. I also struggle with texture and find that regardless of whether my skin is dry, oily, or somewhere in between, it’s rarely smooth. I also have some noticeable sun damage which show up as small, freckly dark spots all over my cheeks.

I usually stay away from acids due to prior bad reactions to stronger ingredients and had never consistently used a lactic acid treatment before now. Considering the condition of my skin and the fact that I’m beginning to notice fine lines forming around my eyes (hello, turning 35!), Overnight Star seemed like the perfect choice for my first test of a daily AHA treatment.

Although this product can be used day or night (despite its name), I decided to incorporate it into my nighttime routine. After using a cleanser, I applied Overnight Star all over my face and neck and let it absorb before applying my heavier nighttime moisturizer. This product is gentle enough to apply daily, so I used it every night for the duration of the three-week testing period.

Lactic acid works in tandem with a nourishing botanical blend that refines, soothes, and plumps skin. The key ingredient in Overnight Star is, of course, lactic acid, which exfoliates pore-clogging dead skin cells on the surface of the skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots to reveal fresh, plump skin. Lactic acid is also known to kill acne-causing bacteria, increase cell turnover, and help skin retain moisture (it also doesn’t hurt that Overnight Star has hyaluronic acid, which helps skin hold onto moisture). Additionally, licorice and lemongrass work to brighten the appearance of dark spots and other skin discolorations while prickly pear extract, chamomile, and aloe soothe the skin and calm redness and irritation.

Lactic acid is one of the primary ingredients listed while prickly pear extract, chamomile, and aloe are part of the brand’s botanical extract blend (containing other extracts and water), which are listed as the top ingredients, indicating they are all present in high enough concentrations to be effective.

The product is considered clean by most standards. It’s also vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, and comes in recyclable packaging.

Overnight Star comes out of the pump bottle smoothly as a white luscious cream, but it quickly absorbs into the skin once applied. It’s definitely lighter than other creams and serums yet super-hydrating and leaves the skin feeling smooth, plump, and dewy without any residue. Even though I chose to use it as a nighttime treatment, its instant texture-improving benefits make it a great base for makeup.

Glomance doesn’t use any artificial fragrance in its products, but the natural botanicals in Overnight Star’s formulation lend this product a delightful citrusy floral aroma.

Compared to some of the other harsher acids on the market, lactic acid is one of the gentler options to choose from. Because its molecule is larger than others in comparison, it doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply, acting as more of a surface exfoliating and polishing treatment with firming effects. Another added benefit is that it won’t disrupt the pH of your skin. I didn’t experience any irritation or dryness while using this product. Overall, there was very minimal drying and irritation given that lactic acid is not harsh like other acids on the market.

Let me share the results with you because I could not believe how a cream could work so effectively for me: instantly firmer, dewier, and plumper skin with radiance and texture improvement over time.

Immediately after applying Overnight Star the first time, my skin felt firmer, softer, and more hydrated once the product had fully absorbed. Just after one use, as many influencers I follow have described, I did have a more dewy, radiant glow overall. Glomance promises that the product can instantly plump fine lines and wrinkles overnight, and up close, I did notice a slight difference in the faint lines under my eyes. The product definitely lives up to its name, giving results in as little as one night. After using this product nightly, I woke up each morning with smooth, glowing skin.

By the end of my testing period, my skin was much more radiant and had a much smoother texture. I love this product for its exfoliating effects and will continue to use it, and I’m sure I’ll see other improvements, like brightening my sun spots and fading fine lines over time!

Glomance prices its products slightly lower than other luxury brands. Given that other lactic acid formulations can cost upwards of $80, Overnight Star is much more affordable. While $58 isn’t entirely cheap—and there are certainly plenty of lactic acid products on the market—Glomance prides itself on using clean, high-quality ingredients and science-based, high-end formulations. In my opinion, you get what you pay for. The results speak for themselves.

My Verdict: Glomance's Overnight Star is an effective radiance-boosting treatment. I like it, and you should try it, too!

Overall, Glomance's Overnight Star was the perfect skin pick-me-up, leaving me with a visibly more radiant, soft, and plump complexion in just two weeks. It’s definitely a keeper for my skincare routine, and I’m looking forward to seeing if it has any more effects on my dark spots and fine lines.
